Over a dozen homes were without water for hours on Thursday afternoon after a water main break, according to a spokesperson with the Philadelphia Water Department. A 13-inch water main broke near the intersection of 18th and Wingohocking streets in the Hunting Park neighborhood of North Philadelp hia around Noon on July 30, officials said. Water department officials explained that they needed to shut off water services to 18 homes as crews work to fix the main. Service was finally turned back on hours later. “Nobody told us anything. They didn’t even tell us they were going to be turning it off. You just turn your water on and nothing came out,” resident Justin Scott told NBC10. “It’s a big inconvenience. I mean, as far as like, you can’t even flush the toilet.” SkyForce10 was over the scene where a large hole was visible in the road that was filled with water. Video obtained by NBC10 showed the moments when water starts to pool in the intersection. Then, a trash truck turns the corner and as it makes its way down the block, the ground gives way. The truck’s front and rear wheels can be seen sinking into the crater which causes even more water to gush onto the road. That truck reported stayed stuck in the hole for more than an hour before crews were able to pull it out. “This is the old city. You got old streets and you got old pipes and things will happen,” neighbor Curtis Dixon said. “It’s just unfortunate that it happened to our area at this time.” The Philadelphia Water Department repaired more than 300 water main breaks during the first two quarters of this fiscal year, according to the most recent city manager’s report. That report shows that the number of breaks in the city increased significantly between fiscal year 2024 and 2025 when PWD repaired nearly 1,000 breaks around the city, which is up 46% compared to the year prior.
