(Updated and corrected) Someone shot and killed a 33-year-old man named Josiah Baptiste on Edgewood Avenue near Pendleton Street Wednesday night. The police department posted about that fatal shooting on the social media site X on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. (Police originally misid entified the site of the shooting as Edgewood Avenue and Yale Avenue, which is in Westville. A press release published Thursday afternoon provided the correct address of Edgewood Avenue near Pendleton Street, which is in the Edgewood neighborhood.) Thursday afternoon’s press release states that police responded to the 500 block of Edgewood at around 9:26 p.m. after several callers reported a person shot. Officers found Baptiste in the median of Edgewood Avenue near Pendleton Street. He was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The press release states that Baptiste’s family lives out of state, and that “Baptiste did not have a fixed address.” The press release also states that Baptiste appears to have been targeted and “this was not a random act.” Police Chief David Zannelli urged anyone with any information about what might have happened to reach out to the police. “We’re taking advantage of all our technology and community assistance,” he said. Wednesday’s shooting death marked the city’s third homicide of the year so far, following the double homicide of 18-year-old Malaki Caraballo and 21-year-old Jayden Martinez at the Fort Hale Gardens condo complex in the East Shore on June 22. According to data provided to the Independent by Zannelli, there have been three homicides and nine nonfatal shootings in New Haven so far this year, compared to eight homicides and 21 nonfatal shootings at this time last year, eight homicides and 50 nonfatal shootings at this time in 2024, 14 homicides and 40 nonfatal shootings at this time in 2023, 7 homicides and 70 nonfatal shootings at this time in 2022, and 17 homicides and 66 nonfatal shootings at this time in 2021.
