Oakland Roots pay fees to play at Coliseum Saturday, but still owe rent
Jul 29, 2026
The Oakland Roots have cleared a major hurdle and will take the field at the Coliseum this Saturday. But the club still owes more than $1.4 million dollars in unpaid rent, and whether they’ll play the rest of their home schedule remains an open question.
“I would say if you ever thought about
going to a Roots game, now is the time to do it,” Alameda County Supervisor David Haubert said.
Haubert, who sits on the Coliseum Authority Board, says the team has paid the fees needed to play this weekend.
Going forward, the deal is simple. The roots must pay for each home game in advance or they don’t play.
“We recognize if they don’t play, they can’t pay. So, it makes sense to let them play,” he said.
The arrangement protects the Coliseum from taking on even more losses, while giving the roots a chance to generate the revenue they need.
