Yale has appointed former New Haven Police Capt. John Healy to serve as the new chief of the Yale Police Department (YPD). University officials announced that appointment in an email sent to students, faculty and staff Tuesday. Healy has most recently served as the acting chief of the YPD aft er former YPD Chief Anthony Campbell, who also served as chief of the New Haven Police Department (NHPD), left Yale for the Harvard Police Department in November.  Healy was a New Haven police officer from 2004 to 2023, when he retired from the NHPD and joined the YPD — a trajectory that Campbell and YPD Assistant Chief Rose Dell also followed. During his time with the NHPD, he served as the district manager for the Dwight and Whalley-Edgewood-Beaver Hills neighborhoods, earned the rank of captain, and was named New Haven’s Officer of the Year in 2020.  Yale Vice President for Campus Services and Technology John Barden and Yale Head of Public Safety Duane Lovello wrote in the Tuesday email that Healy was selected as chief after a “comprehensive national search” that involved “senior university leaders,” members of Yale’s Public Safety Advisory Board (PSAB), Yale Public Safety and representatives of the City of New Haven, among other Yale officials.  In his tenure at the YPD as captain of patrol operations, community engagement, and emergency services, Barden and Lovello wrote, Healy “fortified our strong relationship with the NHPD, leading meaningful pilot programs focused on maintaining exceptional levels of service and rapid response times to incidents affecting our community, such as noise complaints, disturbances, and theft.” “We’re very proud,” said New Haven Police Chief David Zannelli. He said that Healy is “very well respected by members of the New Haven Police Department and members of the community, and will make a great fit for the YPD as their new leader.” “I think soon-to-be Chief Healy will do an excellent job,” said Evelise Ribiero, who in her capacity as New Haven representative to the Yale PSAB interviewed the three finalists for Healy’s position. Ribiero is also chair of the New Haven Board of Police Commissioners and director of compliance at the Housing Authority of New Haven. Ribiero said she was impressed by his experience across law enforcement divisions at the NHPD as well as by his “strong relationships with the community members in New Haven.” She said she is confident he could “respond effectively to complex situations,” mentioning student protests and potential active shooting events on Yale’s campus as two examples.   AnneMarie Rivera-Berrios, the chair of New Haven’s Civilian Review Board, which oversees both the city and university police departments, said she had not yet met Healy but looked forward “to meeting him hopefully at our next meeting and working with him.” The post Healy Tapped As Next Yale Police Chief appeared first on New Haven Independent. ...read more read less
