Carlton Williams, the director of Philadelphia’s Clean and Green Initiatives, will replace Adam Thiel as the city’s managing director. Mayor Cherelle Parker made the announcement during a press conference at City Hall on Tuesday, July 28, at 2 p.m. Parker first thanked Thiel for his servi ce as managing director before announcing Williams would succeed him in the position. Prior to his position as the director of the city’s Clean and Green Initiatives, Williams worked in Parks Recreation, Licenses and Inspections and the Streets Department. Thiel took over as the city’s managing director in January 2024 after being appointed by Mayor Parker. Prior to the role, Thiel was the Philadelphia Fire Department Commissioner and the city’s deputy managing director from 2016 to 2024.
