A young man who was shot and killed Saturday night at a pop-up birthday party near Morgan Hill is being remembered by loved ones as a “cherished son, brother, grandson, cousin, and friend.”
Desi Romero, also known as “Pepper,” was shot to death in the area of Hale and Miramonte avenues du
ring a party hosted by a Bay Area livestreamer. Six other people were injured.
In a GoFundMe page, loved ones said, “Pepper was taken from us far too soon, and our hearts are shattered.”
The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office said about 300 people attended the party, which was held in a field.
“This was sort of a pop-up party that was advertised on social media,” Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Brooks Jarosz said. “The location of that party was not given out until hours before the event occurred. Hundreds of people showed up in what is more or less a field on Hale Avenue in unincorporated Morgan Hill.”
The shooter remained at large as of Monday evening. People who were at the party said a man with a gun got past private security and opened fire.
“The guy that had the gun snuck in,” a woman in attendance said. “I don’t know how, but I guess he had a gun. Everyone seen that he did, and then he got mad.”
A fight then broke out, the woman said.
“I guess they were arguing and that’s when everybody started running and they heard gunshots,” the woman said.
While some partygoers said they believe the shooting was gang related, the sheriff’s office said it could not immediately confirm that.
Deputies spent Monday interviewing witnesses and confirmed the shooter used a handgun.
Detectives asked anyone who was at the party to reach out to the sheriff’s office.
