INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A new bridge under construction over the White River will be named the Greenlawn Memorial Bridge to honor early settlers buried in Indianapolis’s first public cemetery. The city’s Board of Public Works approved the designation, which was recommended by a community advisory group. The span, previously referred to as the Henry Street Bridge, is a key component of the White River Innovation District Project. Construction on the river’s east side impacts roughly 1.3 acres of the former Greenlawn Cemetery, established in 1821. The cemetery was abandoned in the late 19th century and subsequently paved over by developments including a baseball stadium and a rail terminal. Prior to construction, archaeologists excavated 1,709 grave shafts within the city’s right of way between November 2024 and October 2025. Plans to reinter the remains are currently in development. “While many of Indianapolis’ most prominent early residents previously buried here were relocated many years ago, we remain determined to uncover the stories of Indianapolis’ least prominent early citizens,” said Leon Bates, a scholar and advisory group member. He added that the naming acknowledges the city’s pioneers, including early African American residents. The roadway connecting the bridge to Harding Street and Kentucky Avenue has been named Innovator Way. The bridge, which will feature an extension of the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, is expected to open in early 2027.
