Hannah Rapp, the championship-contending boxer from Indiana tragically killed while biking in Texas, will be inducted into the Indiana Boxing Hall of Fame.Rapp, from Yorktown, was an Indiana Golden Gloves champion as an amateur, won the NABF featherweight title as a professional, and challenged for the WBC world featherweight championship in June.Rapp held an 8-1-1 record as a pro, with 5 wins by knockout, when she died.She's an Indiana legend for what she achieved in such a short time, Indiana Boxing Hall of Fame founder and president Craig Houk said, believing Rapp's accomplishments over such a short span deserve to be recognized.Houk called Rapp's coach to tell him Hannah Rapp would join the Hall of Fame class of 2027.He almost broke down crying because he knew what that would mean a lot to Hannah, and knew what it would mean to her family, Houk said. She knew that one day she'd be a hall of famer. I think that was her dream come true. And I think she's accomplished everything she could accomplish in such a short period of time."The 26-year olds life and career were cut short when a driver hit and killed her on July 18.According to prosecuting documents, Rapps boyfriend was biking with her along a rural road outside College Station, Texas when 31-year-old Charles Medina sped past them. When the boyfriend "threw his arms up and hollered", he said Medina "slammed on his brakes and skidded to a stop before putting the vehicle in reverse" and crashed into Rapp. She died at the hospital.Medina claimed he thought the two were flagging him down and didn't see Rapp. Investigators said the physical evidence at the scene "contradicted the defendant's account".Medina was initially booked on a manslaughter charge. According to jail records, a count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon has been added along with charges out of another county.Nicknamed Hanarchy, Rapp was known for her aggression as a boxer, and warmth and positivity outside the ring. She also competed in track and field at Purdue.Rapps death has led to an outpouring of support across Indiana and Texas. Simultaneous candlelight vigils were held at her boxing gym in Bryan, Texas, former gym in Brookston, Indiana, as well as Yorktown, where she grew up.Thousands have signed a petition calling for increased bond penalties in Texas for people with a criminal history.Houk said one of Rapps former opponents will be in attendance for her Hall of Fame induction, along with celebrity inductees, Sugar Shane Mosely and former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes.The 2027 Indiana Boxing Hall of Fame induction ceremony takes place April 30 and May 1 inside the Hilton Garden Inn Indianapolis Airport, at 8910 Hatfield Drive in Indianapolis. ...read more read less
