INDIANAPOLIS (WRTV) A piece of LGBTQ history for the state of Indiana has been ripped away at its roots from Monument Circle.The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and the Indiana State Police tracked down security foo tage showing four so-far unidentified males walking around 12:40 a.m. July 16 in Monument Circle.Two of the men stopped to inspect the Indiana historical marker and then attacked it, eventually tearing it off the signpost. Police found the plaque lying on the ground.The plaque, which will need to be replaced, honors the first large-scale public gathering for the LGBTQ community in state history, which took place in 1990.Executive Director Jen Carruthers of Indy Pride said Friday the organization may not exist without that event. "Indy Pride itself, we stand on the shoulders of that gathering and the folks that made it happen. Because Indy Pride came to be in 1995, five years later. I don't find that coincidental."Indy Pride hopes the perpetrators face justice and are also taught the importance of the historical marker and what it meant for the local pride community.
