Less than a month before the Aug. 11 primary elections, the state’s “Find Your Legislator” database has been updated to reflect voters’ accurate state assembly districts. The update means that one more widely-referenced source of voter information is now reliable for all New Haven reside nts to use. The Independent first reported on June 10 that at least 432 addresses had been assigned to the wrong state assembly district for the past two state election cycles. As of late May, according to data compiled by the Secretary of the State’s office, at least 744 voters were registered at the impacted addresses. Michael Harrington, the executive director of the Joint Committee on Legislative Management, said that staffers were able to update the “Find Your Legislator” database on Monday, July 20, following an inquiry from the Independent about inaccuracies in the search results. The update reflects one of many voter databases that have had to be individually corrected or updated after the district errors were discovered. The New Haven Registrar of Voters’ office appears to have quietly corrected the mistakes at a local level at some point before May 30. But by then, state offices, elected officials, and campaigning candidates had already built their own systems based on inaccurate voter databases from the Registrar of Voters’ office. Multiple voters at impacted residences told the Independent that they continued to receive mailers from the wrong state representatives and state representative candidates after the errors were first reported. State representative candidates in the 92nd and 97th District primary elections all said that they are now either using updated mailing lists or in the process of updating their mailing lists. VAN, a Democratic canvassing app, is “built off of SOTS [Secretary of the State] data, which in turn comes from Registrars of Voters. It’s updated every month, most recently on June 30th,” wrote Democratic Party communications strategist Patty McQueen in an email. She wrote on July 16 that after spot-checking addresses, the party has confirmed that the database is up-to-date. Justin Farmer, a candidate in the 92nd District race, said that in addition to updating his mailing address list, his campaign team created a public, accurate, interactive district map for residents to confirm their state assembly districts. The Registrar of Voters does not yet appear to have notified voters of the errors. The office has not made any public statements, outside of a public hearing hosted in early July by the Board of Alders City Services and Environmental Policy Committee. At that hearing, legal representatives for the Registrar of Voters office said that the office intends to mail notices to every address that changed state assembly districts after 2021. (That group of addresses would reach many individuals who were not impacted by the district errors and would exclude others who were assigned to the wrong district prior to 2021.) Neither Democratic Registrar Shannel Evans, who had been in office during the 2021 redistricting effort as well as the 2022 and 2024 election cycles, nor Evans’ legal representation responded to requests for comment by the publication time of this article.
