The Summit County Fair kicks off next weekend in Coalville, giving residents the opportunity to celebrate the Wasatch Back and its ranching history in style. The fair is described as a “traditional, small-town county fair, with cowboys and bucking broncos, a carnival midway, beauty queens, hom e-canned goods, flowers, vegetables and more.” Admission and most of the activities are free, but the demolition derby and PRCA rodeo events require tickets. Tickets for the demolition derby are $24. Tickets for the three-day PRCA rodeo are $15 for adults, $9 for children aged 4 to 14 and free for children under the age of 3. “Enjoy the traditions of the cowboys and experience some of the nonstop excitement and competition on the road to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas,” says the PRCA rodeo description on the fair’s website. “This year’s rodeo lineup will consist of national-level competitors, veteran circuit cowboys and new up-and-coming talent.” Rodeo events include bull riding, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing, tie down roping, team roping and steer wrestling. The two-day Little Buckaroo Rodeo gives children a chance to try their hand at traditional rodeo events, too, like breakaway roping and barrel racing. But there are also activities specifically for kids, such as the Little Buckaroo Rodeo’s popsicle eating contest. “Mutton busting and calf riding has been kicking its way into fans’ hearts with its spirited pint-sized version of rodeo,” the website says. “In this event, children attempt to ride galloping sheep or calves in the ring and stay on for 6 seconds. These are no fluffy little lambs or cuddly calves either — the riders have to work to stay on!” Registration for the Little Buckaroo Rodeo is open until Aug. 2. The fair will also have a parade, 5K, bike ride and archery events in addition to exhibitions for local 4-H clubs, fine arts, floriculture, home arts, horticulture, table setting, and poultry and rabbits. County officials have previously reported the fair draws 20,000 people to the area every August. The Summit County Fair starts on Aug. 1 and runs through Aug. 8.
