National Weather Service teams hit the ground in New Jersey and New York as they investigate at least five confirmed tornadoes that touched down during the height of Tuesday’s severe storms. NWS’ Mount Holly station in New Jersey shared a map of the areas they planned to survey Wednesday — one in Morris County stretching from Stanhope to the Parsippany-Troy Hills area, the other in Morristown. Video showed heavy damage in those areas. The NWS confirmed on Wednesday there had been a tornado near Stanhope and Mount Olive, another on just east of Lake Hopatcong, and a third one further east on I-80 near Pine Brook. The strength of these tornadoes was not immediately clear. Video from a homeowner’s doorbell camera showed torrential rain come down, then wind comes and blows multiple small packages off her porch and down the street. “I’ve never seen rain like that- we had 6 packages that were swept up into the wind and thrown down the street it looked like the ‘Wizard of Oz,’ I couldn’t believe it,” said Gionna Wasser, adding she’s convinced it was a tornado. Officials said an EF-0 tornado touched down much farther south in Cape May, though it started as a waterspout. It only came ashore for a minute, with estimated peak winds at 60 to 70 miles per hour. It traveled a path of 0.3 miles, with no injuries reported. The NWS in New York confirmed another EF-0 tornado had touched down during the storms, this one in Westchester County. The path of that tornado shows it went from Purchase to Rye Brook just after 4 p.m. Winds peaked at 85 mph at the time, and it path of the tornado stretched nearly two miles. A flurry of tornado warnings popped up as the system moved through. The entire NYC metro area was under a tornado watch for much of the afternoon and evening.
