A 34-year-old Corpus Christi man was arrested this week in connection with a fatal stabbing last week on the city's westside after detectives obtained a murder warrant outlining a witness account of the killing, according to cou rt documents.Jerry Lee Alvarez was taken into custody July 21 after Robbery Homicide detectives identified him as a suspect and obtained the warrant, according to a Corpus Christi Police Department news release. He was taken to the main police station for questioning and then booked into the City Detention Center. His bond is set at $1 million.The stabbing occurred about 9:45 p.m. July 16 in the 1700 block of 18th Street, police said. Officers found the victim, 56-year-old Jose Davila, unresponsive on the kitchen floor of an apartment with a stab wound to his upper left abdomen, according to an arrest affidavit.Officers began administering first aid until paramedics arrived. Davila was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.A woman who lived at the apartment was detained at the scene the night of the stabbing but told detectives she did not witness the incident, the affidavit states. No arrests were made at that time.According to the affidavit, a witness later came forward and told detectives he had been at the residence that evening when Alvarez, Davila and others had been drinking. The witness said a disagreement broke out after Alvarez felt disrespected, and Alvarez told Davila to go downstairs.The witness said the situation escalated and he saw Alvarez lunge at Davila with a knife, stabbing him in the abdomen, the affidavit states. The witness said Davila grabbed his abdomen and said, "you hit me," before Davila went back upstairs.The witness told detectives he did not initially come forward because he feared retaliation, as Alvarez was a known gang member with a violent past who lived near the witness's mother, according to the affidavit.The witness also told investigators that Alvarez later admitted to the stabbing, saying he did it because Davila had disrespected an associate of his who had been killed, the affidavit states.An employee at a nearby restaurant also told investigators that the woman detained at the scene had placed a food order that evening that was picked up by two men matching descriptions relevant to the investigation, the affidavit states.Detectives with the department's Robbery/Homicide Division responded to the scene and led the investigation.Anyone with information is asked to call the CCPD Criminal Investigations Division at 361-886-2840.
