With a strong cold front dropping through the Ohio Valley, we saw some active weather across Central and Eastern Kentucky as strong to severe storms brought gusty to damaging winds along with torrential rainfall to many locations on Tuesday. The persistent warmth and humidity combined with an unusually strong storm system by late July standards helped fuel everything with a number of possible tornadoes and a few flooding issues given the pretty saturated ground from all the recent heavy rain events. Fortunately the payoff for the stormy weather is on the way into the mid-week. The cold front will act as a big “squeegee” and essentially sweep all the heat and humidity that’s been camped out over our area the last several weeks out of the region as we roll into Wednesday and beyond. While it may take a bit for the drier air to work in, especially across our far southern counties a steady north breeze will drive in much drier air along with a milder air-mass so we are in store for a wonderful break in our summer pattern. With plenty of sunshine into the afternoon hours along with more comfortable humidity levels, it should feel quite nice to be outdoors as afternoon highs reach the upper 70s and low-80s. A “cool” area of high pressure will settle nicely into the Ohio Valley for the late week, bringing us the most pleasant stretch of weather we have seen so far this summer. With lots of sunshine expected both days, you’ll want to spend as much time outdoors as possible (given that it is during the work week)  as the warm and dry air should make it feel pretty fantastic for late July. The early morning hours will feel delightful with morning lows in the upper 50s to low-60s before temperatures climb back into the upper 70s and low-80s, which is several degrees below average for this time of the year. The bottom line is soak up the comfortable weather while it lasts and enjoy! Heading into the weekend, a bit of a return flow will kick in as winds shift around to the southwest allowing for a slow return of some humidity across Central and Eastern Kentucky. At the same time, a few weak disturbances in the upper level flow aloft may squeeze out a stray shower or storm (especially on Saturday) but it looks like most locations will be dry. Afternoon highs should jump back into the mid-80s to begin the weekend with upper 80s back around on Sunday so you should be in pretty good shape for any outdoor plans over the final weekend of July. A weak cold front looks to drop through the region early next week with a better chance for a few storms back in the mix as temperatures remain pretty close to average with highs in the mid to upper 80s.
