As temperatures creep toward 100 degrees today and tomorrow, the National Weather Service is advising people to stay hydrated and keep cool indoors. The weather service issued a heat advisory starting today, Tuesday, July 21, at 10 a.m. through 11 p.m. Wednesday, July 22. During that time, people in the Salem area will be at increased risk of heat-related illnesses. Tuesday’s high is forecasted to reach 99 degrees, while Wednesday will be slightly hotter at 101 degrees, according to the weather service forecast. “Drink plenty of fluids, stay in a cool place during the heat of the day, stay out of the sunshine, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the advisory said. Smoke or clouds moving into the region could cause those highs to dip below the forecasted temperatures.  Several wildfires are burning across Oregon, with more breaking out this weekend in central Oregon due to lightning strikes. North-northwest winds, forecasted to blow about 6 miles per hour in the afternoons, could bring that smoke to Salem. The weather service advises people to stay in air conditioning or use fans if that is not available. The advisory recommended keeping windows closed during the day and open at night, unless air quality is degraded due to wildfire smoke. For those going outside, the advisory recommends people wear lightweight, loose clothing and reserve strenuous activities like exercise for the early mornings or evenings. When temperatures reach over 90 degrees, state law requires that employers provide workers in those temperatures access to cool drinking water, shaded or air-conditioned areas and 10 minute rest breaks at least every two hours. When temperatures reach 100 degrees, those breaks must be 15 minutes every hour.  The Oregon Health Authority shares warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke on its website, which include nausea, dizziness and heart rate changes. Those with signs of heat stroke should call 911 immediately.The city will have spray fountains open, which provide a place for families to play and cool down at local parks. See a list of locations and hours here. The Capitol’s tall, outdoor fountains, known as the Wall of Water, often run when temperatures get above 80 degrees. They are located along Court Street across from the Capitol, 900 Court St. N.E.The Salem Public Library has air conditioning and is open on Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.The ARCHES Day Center will open its downtown cooling center to people ages 18 and older on Tuesday from 1-7 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. according to a Monday statement. The cooling center is located downtown, at 615 Commercial St. N.E., and pets are allowed. It provides an air conditioned space, beverages and other cooling supplies such as neck wraps.The ARCHES Family First resource center will open to families on Tuesday and Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The family center is located at 1255 Broadway St. N.E.Cherriots provides free bus rides to cooling centers. No proof is required. Riders just need to tell the driver they’re heading to a cooling center.
