The Philadelphia Orchestra will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of jazz legend John Coltrane with a special performance featuring Coltrane’s son, Ravi Coltrane, on July 22, 2026. Born Sept. 23, 1926, John Coltrane spent nearly 15 years of his musical career in Philadelphia, where h e emerged as one of jazz music’s most influential figures. During his time in the city, Coltrane released his debut album, “Coltrane” and his acclaimed sophomore album, “Blue Train.” Coltrane resided in Philadelphia’s Strawberry Mansion neighborhood from 1952 to 1958. His former home, now known as the John Coltrane House, has been designated a National Historic Landmark. Coltrane 100 will feature newly commissioned arrangements of Coltrane’s most notable and celebrated works, reimagined by today’s most acclaimed arrangers. The Orchestra’s program will be conducted by Edwin Outwater, music director of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and principal guest conductor and curator of the BBC Concert Orchestra. Joining the Philadelphia Orchestra is Ravi Coltrane, the second son of John and Alice Coltrane. He is a critically acclaimed Grammy-nominated saxophonist, bandleader, and composer. Doors for the concert open at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the TD Pavilion at the Highmark Mann Center.
