We’re getting close to Eagles training camp so we’re taking a look at five notable camp competitions this summer. We already took a look at safety. Up today: Receiver. After months of speculation, the Eagles finally traded A.J. Brown to begin the month of June, moving on from the Pro Bowle r after four fantastic seasons in Philly. It was clear that Brown wanted out and the Eagles got a solid return for him from the Patriots. Without Brown, the Eagles won’t have to search far for his replacement. Their new WR1 will be DeVonta Smith. The former Heisman Trophy winner and first-round pick has been productive during his five years in the NFL but will be a WR1 in 2026 for the first time since his rookie season. There’s a ton of internal excitement about Smith’s getting his chance. But that’s the only role we know for sure among the receivers. Smith is WR1 but after that, there are battles for playing time, targets and even a roster spot or two. Here’s a look at the main competitors: Makai LemonAge: 22Experience: RookieSize: 5-foot-11, 192 pounds The Eagles traded up to draft Lemon out of USC with the No. 20 overall pick. Lemon was a really productive receiver in college, winning the Biletnikoff Award as the top receiver in the nation. The Eagles thought he was a top 15 player in this draft and were pleased to get him at No. 20. Lemon isn’t the biggest, strongest or fastest, but he has good hands, runs good routes and has an exceptional feel for space as a receiver. He mostly played in the slot at USC but has some inside-outside versatility. He should push for a ton of playing time this season and is competing with Dontayvion Wicks and Hollywood Brown to be the No. 2 receiver in this offense. Dontayvion WicksAge: 25Experience: Year 4Size: 6-foot-1, 206 pounds The Eagles didn’t just trade to acquire Wicks; they also paid him on a $12.5 million extension. That tells you that they at least have a bit of a plan for him this season. Wicks spent the first three years of his career in Green Bay and had solid production. But he was a bit buried on their depth chart so the Eagles are projecting him to step into a bigger role in Philly. New OC Sean Mannion coached Wicks for a couple seasons in Green Bay, so this was a move to bring in a player Mannion knows and trusts. Wicks also has an understanding of how to operate in this offensive system, which is important. Wicks in his first three seasons had 108 catches for 1,328 yards with 11 touchdowns. The Eagles at the very least expect him to be their WR3 in 2026. Hollywood BrownAge: 29Experience: Year 8Size: 5-foot-9, 170 The Eagles signed the former first-round pick to a one-year deal this offseason. Brown is a veteran who hasn’t lived up to his draft status as the No. 25 overall pick back in 2019 but he has been productive. Brown has had at least 500 receiving yards in six of his seven NFL seasons with a 1,000-yard season with the Ravens in 2021. Last season with the Chiefs, Brown had 49 catches for 587 yards and 5 touchdowns. So we shouldn’t count him out when we’re talking about significant roles in the Eagles offense this season. Is there a chance the younger players like Lemon and Wicks take control of those roles? Yeah, that’s possible. But having a veteran like Brown in the mix is a good thing for the team. Elijah MooreAge: 26Experience: Year 6Size: 5-foot-10, 178 pounds Another veteran on a one-year deal, Moore was once a second-round pick back in 2021. He has had some moderately productive seasons — topping out with 640 yards in 2023 — but didn’t have a big season in 2025. Last year, splitting time with the Bills and Broncos, Moore had just 9 catches for 112 yards. But Moore has some talent and is still just 26. He’s a bit of a wild card entering this training camp. Darius CooperAge: 24Experience: Year 2Size: 5-foot-11, 210 pounds Last training camp, Cooper made the Eagles’ roster as a UDFA out of Tarleton State and even saw some playing time despite a shoulder injury. Cooper played in 13 games and ended up with 9 catches for 92 yards. He also did some of the dirty work required at the position. Even though Cooper showed promise as a rookie, he’s a bit buried on the depth chart these days and will again have to earn a spot on the roster with a strong training camp performance. Johnny WilsonAge: 25Experience: Year 3Size: 6-foot-6, 228 pounds A year ago, Wilson was getting close to locking up a roster spot when he suffered a really bad injury to his knee and ankle and missed his entire second season. As a rookie sixth-round pick in 2024, Wilson filled the role of blocking receiver and clearly has unique size at the position. As long as he’s healthy this summer, he’s going to push for a roster spot in his third NFL season. Britain CoveyAge: 29Experience: Year 5Size: 5-foot-8, 173 pounds It took too long for the Eagles to go back to Covey as their full-time punt returner in 2025 even though he was clearly their best option. In his NFL career, Covey has been a very good punt returner. He has a career average of 11.3 yards per return. The Eagles have other options to return punts but those players might be too important on their respective sides of the football. The real question is if the Eagles are going to be willing to use a 53-man roster spot on Covey or if they’ll try to get him to the practice squad and use up those elevations before deciding their next steps. The rest Those players listed above have the best chances to make the roster but there are four other receivers on the team: Quez Watkins, Danny Gray, Samori Toure, Erik Ezukanma. Both Watkins and Gray offer pure field-stretching speed and are former draft picks. Toure has played in a Shanahan offense before and Ezukanma is a former fourth-round pick who most recently played for the DC Defenders of the UFL. Outlook There’s no question that Smith is the top receiver this season. My best guess is that Lemon will follow him in catches and targets but it could end up being very close between Lemon and Wicks. Perhaps Wicks has a bigger role early as a veteran but Lemon continues to grow. Brown is the wild card in the equation. The other race for roster spots will be exciting. If the top four are locks — Smith, Lemon, Wicks and Brown — then that leaves one or two spots open for Moore, Cooper, Wilson, Covey and more.
