After a typical mid to late July weekend with a few scattered storms around along with warm and humid conditions, we saw a mainly dry start to the week on Monday. After some morning clouds and fog, sunshine returned into the afternoon hours with a few stray showers popping up thanks to a leftov er boundary in place, although most locations remained dry. Temperatures surged back into upper 80s for afternoon highs, which is right around average for this time of the year. Hopefully you enjoyed the fairly quiet start to the week as things look much more active into Tuesday. With an unusually strong cold front by mid-July standards set to drop into the Ohio Valley on Tuesday, it will definitely be a day you’ll want to be weather aware across Central and Eastern Kentucky. Strong to severe storms are looking more likely through the day, with multiple rounds of storms possible. While damaging winds look to be the primary severe threat, there is the potential for a few isolated tornadoes along with large hail so basically all modes of severe weather are on the table. The Storm Prediction Center has a Level 3 severe risk (out of 5) for the Bluegrass region (including Lexington and points eastward with a Level 2 risk for the rest of our viewing area. Again just be weather aware and have a way to get your alerts on Tuesday as we typically don’t see many potential widespread severe weather events during the heart of the summer season. Afternoon highs should reach the mid-80s although the timing of the storms will have a big impact on where temperatures land at any given location. The aforementioned strong cold front will act as a big giant squeegee and flip our weather pattern completely as we roll into the mid to late week. All the hot and muggy conditions we’ve dealt with lately will be replaced by a less humid and milder air-mass for a few days, which will be a very welcome change and unusual for this time of the year. Other than a few lingering showers early Wednesday in the far southeast, look for mostly sunny skies and very pleasant conditions across the region. Afternoon highs should be in the upper 70s and low-80s with very low humidity levels so it should feel fantastic to be outdoors for any length of time. Even though it is during the week, make some plans and try to get outdoors if you can. Heading into Friday and the upcoming weekend, we’ll see a bit of a return flow so moisture will slowly begin to creep back into the area as temperatures climb back through the 80s for afternoon highs. Other than a stray shower chance here and there, it should be a mainly dry weekend and good for any outdoor plans as humidity levels will still be pretty manageable overall. We should be back into a more typical late July pattern by this time next week with upper 80s for afternoon highs and possibly a few pop-up storms as a weak boundary works into the Ohio Valley.
