More severe weather is expected across the tri-state Tuesday, days after a powerful storm system ravaged the region with flash floods and triggered tornado alerts. Like Saturday, all the threats — flash flooding, isolated tornadoes, damaging wind, and hail — are on the table. T he greatest threats from Tuesday’s storms will be damaging straight-line wind (gusts 60+ mph) and isolated flash flooding.  The strongest storms could deliver over two inches of rain per hour, which can easily lead to flash flooding of low-lying roads, subways and urban areas in general. One piece of good news: Tuesday’s storms are expected to be faster-moving than Saturday’s, which could keep rainfall totals lower and limit the flood threat. Central and South Jersey face the highest risk of flash flooding, although the entire tri-state is under at least a slight risk. Hail and isolated, quick spin-up tornadoes are secondary threats on Tuesday. Storms will be strongest to the west of New York City, which is where the hail and tornado threat will be greatest. As they move east, storms will weaken somewhat, but the threats for severe weather will still be there. The storm threat will last most of the day, but don’t expect rain to be falling all day. Like Saturday’s storms, expect one, two, or maybe three waves of wet weather to move through your area from morning through evening.  In the morning, storms will be more isolated and not as strong.  From mid-day through the evening, storms will be more potent and damaging.
