Crews on Thursday were working to recover the wreckage of a boat that sank in San Francisco Bay earlier in the week and locate the three people who remain missing, police said. The San Francisco Police Department’s Marine Unit was working with the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies to locate t he 49-foot cabin cruiser, which is believed to be resting on a rocky seabed at an estimated depth of 120 feet, police said. Up against strong tidal currents, wind, and other weather challenges, dive teams were using boat-mounted sonar platforms and other tools to perform a grid search for the boat, police said. If the vessel is located, police will work with the Coast Guard and other partner agencies to evaluate options and determine if a safe recovery operation is possible, police said. David McMurdie with California Recovery Divers said getting to the boat will be a significant challenge, if crews can even locate it. “You can imagine being under 120 feet of water, and a river is running through that – one direction and then another direction – so it’s enormously dangerous,” McMurdie said. During a news conference Wednesday, SFPD Special Operations Bureau Cmdr. Brien Hoo said if divers can’t get to the boat, they may use an underwater drone. “See how the boat is structurally sound and then we could look at the feasibility of working with our partners on raising the boat if needed,” Hoo said.
