Two young girls and two adults were hurt in a rowhome fire in West Philadelphia on Wednesday night, Philadelphia Fire Department officials said. When fire crews arrived at the home at around 10 p.m. near 55th and Market streets, they first worked to rescue a girl who was trapped in the blaze, off icials said. Firefighters were able to get her out of the home, but they were taken to the hospital in serious condition, officials said. Léelo en español aquí On Thursday morning, NBC10’s Lili Zheng spoke to Micheal Hills, the grandfather of the two girls — aged 3 and 6 — injured in this incident, who said the younger girl was trapped on the second floor of the home. “They were telling me that she was brave. She, even though with all the smoke in her throat, she still was trying to talk, still trying to save her sister, you know? And that’s the way she is,” Hills said. Hills said his family has lived in the home for about a year and, his 3-year-old grandchild was the one who was trapped on the second floor. Both children have serious injuries, according to fire officials. Hills said they appear to be making progress but they’re still in the hospital, along with his wife, who is expected to be okay. Speaking with NBC10 on Thursday, Hills said he was grateful for neighbors who stepped in to help Wednesday night. “I just thank God that for that man [neighbor] right there, you know what I mean? I thank God for him and everybody else that was involved in helping getting my family out of there,” he said. The children remained in critical condition while the two adults involved in this incident have been listed in stable condition. Neighbors at the scene told NBC10 that they heard screaming when flames broke out at the home late Wednesday. “The woman that was upstairs, she was yelling, ‘get the baby, I can’t get the baby,'” one neighbor recalled. “She was saying a baby is in a back room and I don’t know that she jumped out that window or not because they were telling her to jump.” The fire was placed under control at 10:18 p.m. and the cause remains under investigation, officials said. SkyForce10 was over the home in the area of 55th and Market streets at around 10:30 p.m. to find that firefighters had mostly placed the fire under control, but both the first and second floors were charred. NBC10 was also at the scene on the ground to get another look at the damage. It appeared at least one of the neighboring rowhomes had damage to its first floor as well. Officials did not immediately say what may have caused this fire. But, an investigation was ongoing. This is a developing story; check back for more details. ...read more read less
