A Fresno County man accused of shooting a woman during an alleged lane dispute on a San Diego freeway pleaded not guilty in a San Diego court on Tuesday. According to the California Highway Patrol, the shooting happened Thursday night on the transition lane from state Route 52 east to Interstate 15 south. Investigators said two women and a child were traveling in a black Ford Explorer when they became involved in a lane dispute with the driver of a gray Volkswagen Passat, identified as 27-year-old Zian Aldrich. Investigators allege Aldrich fired a weapon into the Explorer, striking the female driver twice. She was taken to a hospital. Two other people in the SUV, including a child, were also inside the vehicle at the time of the shooting. Authorities said Aldrich left the scene but was arrested the following day. During Monday’s court appearance, a judge ordered that media not show Aldrich’s face. Limited details about the investigation were discussed in court. The prosecutor said the focus remains on protecting both the victim and the public. “Our goal is to make sure not only this victim is safe but the community is safe and that everyone driving on our roads and freeways is safe while doing so,” Lauren Hugo said. Aldrich is being held without bail. He was booked on suspicion of three counts of attempted murder and two weapons-related charges. He is expected to be assigned a public defender and is scheduled to return to court July 22. This story was originally reported for broadcast by NBC San Diego.
