The Dallas Wings (16-8) are off to their best start to a season in a decade after defeating the Chicago Sky (7-16) at the American Airlines Center on Sunday night. Paige Bueckers scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to extend the Wings’ winning streak to five games, their longest since 202 3. Fellow All-Star starter Jessica Shepard chipped in 19 points and 10 rebounds of her own. Bueckers is up to fifth in the league in points per game. The only other Wing in the top 25 is Shepard at 15 points per game. The only player scoring more points per game on a team with a better record than Bueckers is reigning four-time league MVP A’ja Wilson. Arike Ogunbowale scored 17, and rookie Azzi Fudd scored 16, in front of a crowd of 13,236. The Wings have already beaten the Liberty (13-11) twice this season, both in Brooklyn. The Wings host the Liberty Thursday night and then the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday afternoon before returning to the road to take on the Portland Fire on Wednesday, July 22. The Wings currently have the fourth-best record in the league; the top eight teams make the playoffs. The Wings have 20 games remaining in their WNBA regular season. Only eight of the Wings’ remaining games are against teams that currently have a winning record: New York, Atlanta (13-10), Washington (11-10), Golden State (17-7), Minnesota (17-6), and Indiana (14-9). The Wings play Washington, Golden State and Indiana twice before the season ends. Their last seven games of the season are against teams with a losing record. The Wings have two more games at the AAC this season: Aug. 7 against Golden State and Aug. 20, when Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever come to town. ...read more read less
