Here's how many World Cup trophies each 2026 semifinalist has won
Jul 12, 2026
Then there were four.
The 2026 World Cup has officially trimmed from 48 teams to just four. And it’s a thrilling final mix, as each nation is among the top four ranked teams by FIFA. It’s the first time that has occurred in tournament history, believe it or not.
France, Spain, England and
Argentina will all seek to make more history having avoided potential upsets en route to the semifinals.
La Albiceleste and Les Bleus are the two most recent World Cup winners, too, so there might be a psychological edge involved.
Here’s what to know about each semifinalist’s World Cup trophy tally:
England: 1
Will football finally come home this year? English fans have been waiting since 1966, when the Three Lions won its only men’s World Cup. England took down West Germany 4-2 after extra time, doing so on home soil at Wembley Stadium in London.
The Three Lions have never made the final since or even before that. They fell in the semifinals in 1990 and 2018, the latter of which was an upset loss vs. Croatia. Can they push through this year? Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka will need to be decisive in attack.
Spain: 1
Similar to England, Spain have just one World Cup trophy to its name. It came much more recently, though, as La Furia Roja finally claimed the trophy in 2010 after taking down the Netherlands 1-0 in extra time. Spain’s only other strong finish was fourth place in 1950, with not much success since the 2010 win.
La Furia Roja were grouped in 2014 before exiting early in the round of 16 in 2018 and 2022. Lamine Yamal, Rodri and super sub Mikel Merino have been vital for their progression this year.

Facts About the World Cup Trophy
France: 2
Les Bleus suffered two third-place finishes in 1958 and 1986 before eventually winning it on home soil in 1998. They hadn’t qualified in the two World Cups before that, but they routed Brazil 3-0 in the 1998 final to ensure the home crowd wouldn’t be disappointed.
France added its second World Cup in 2018, with a runners-up finish in 2006 and 2022 its other notable placements since the turn of the century. Kylian Mbappe made history en route to winning the 2018 final as a teenager. He’s now the leader of his nation at 27 years old and will need support from Michael Olise, 2025 Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue, among others, to hoist another.
Argentina: 3
La Albiceleste tops the semifinalists with three World Cup wins thus far. They finished as runners-up in the first ever tournament in 1930, though the field was much smaller then. Argentina won its first in 1978 before claiming it again in 1986. The 1990 tournament saw the nation fall short as runners-up in its repeat bid.
In the Lionel Messi era, the nation most notably finished as runners-up in 2014 as Germany took home the title. Messi and Co. eventually bounced back in 2022, taking down France in an extra-time thriller. Now 39, Messi will need to do something never seen before to defend the trophy and bring it back to Argentina for a fourth time in its history.
