Tech's McGuire talks Brendan Sorsby drama, desire to renew Texasrivalry game
Jul 11, 2026
Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire addressed the viral controversies that surrounded his team this spring.
“When you make decisions on a player’s mental and physical health and, and what’s best for the player, then you’re usually right. And that’s where the decisions were coming from. W
hat was going to be best for Brendan Sorsby,” McGuire said. “I’ve never been through anything like this when it comes to coaching, and I’ve been doing it for 32 years.”
McGuire also addressed the backlash he’s faced.
“We’ll see how it goes whenever the ball is kicked off. But I think because the majority of my peers and people that I really trust and mentor, you know, they were there. I mean, like I said, Eric Morris called me and he said, man, I don’t want to ask anything other than, how are you? Like, are you good? You know, he’s a West Texas guy. He’s a Red Raider,” McGuire said.
McGuire still expects Sorsby to have a future in the NFL.
“I think he’s doing good. You know, this year is going to be really hard, but I think he’s going to attack it from the standpoint, not just as a player,” McGuire said. “He has a problem. And, I don’t know about you, but I’ve been around addiction. You know, I’ve had addicts in my family. And so, you know, you’ve got to really deal with it every single day and find ways to not relapse. And so I think there’s a real chance of growth this year… And somebody’s going to take him next year really early. And they’re going to get a really good person and a really good quarterback.”
McGuire also doubled down on his belief that Tech and Texas should play each other at Big 12 media days Tuesday at the Ford Center. The topic was initially broached two months ago when, after Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian took a swipe at Tech’s strength of schedule, McGuire said that he’d “love” to play the in-state powerhouse. He even reportedly spoke to Abilene Christian and Texas State — the two programs’ respective Week 1 opponents — about a potential buyout to clear the schedule for a nationally ranked showdown.
“Spot the ball, man, we’re ready to go right now,” McGuire said Tuesday afternoon. “We’ll play tomorrow. We don’t need any film study or anything like that, and I know they don’t either.”
The Longhorns and Red Raiders used to play regularly when both were Big 12 conference members, but after the former left for the SEC two years ago, the in-state rivalry ended. McGuire, who also praised Sarkisian as a coach and play-caller, urged for that game’s return as well as other local showdowns.
