Beloved former college basketball star shot dead in Harlem
Jul 11, 2026
A former Fairleigh Dickenson University men’s basketball student-athlete decribed as a “standout” and a “leader” was shot and killed Friday night in Harlem.
The New York City Police Dept. says 35-year-old Kinu Rochford of Crown Heights, Brooklyn died after being shot in the head along w
ith two other people. Rochford was rushed to Mount Sinai Morningside in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead.
After attending FDU, Rochford played professionally in Europe for several years. He also worked for “Win,” the largest provider of housing and supportive services for homeless families with children in New York City and the nation.
“FDU is devastated to hear of the tragic passing,” the school said in a statement. “Kinu Rochford was a key member of the FDU men’s basketball team from 2011-13 and led the team in scoring as a senior in 2012-13.”
Rochford was playing in a tournament Friday night, NBC New York has learned. But he was not playing at the time of the shooting.
Police say along with Rochford, a 28-year-old man was shot in the shin and a 22-year-old woman was shot in her right forearm. Those two victims are recovering.
The tournament was taking place behind 70 Lenox Ave., at the Martin Luther King Jr. Towers. Investigators say no arrests have been made, and offered no description of the possible shooter or shooters.

Rochford was recognized in 2013 with the FDU George Braun Leadership Award, the school said. “This distinction is given to a student-athlete who displayed exemplary leadership skills among their peers. He graduated in May of that year with a degree in sports administration. Rochford was often seen cheering on other FDU athletes at their respective competitions.”
“Our hearts are heavier today hearing the tragic news ,” said Director of Athletics Jason Young, according to rhe FDU website. “Those who knew Kinu described him as a fierce competitor with a big heart who made many positive contributions to the FDU community. Today is another reminder to value each other and every day that we have.”
Police have not revealed any possible motive for the killing.
“Kinu was a beloved friend, colleague, and father to a young son who dedicated his life to serving others,” said Christine Quinn, President CEO of Win and a former New York City Council Speaker.
“After graduation, Rochford continued to play the game he loved overseas for nearly a decade,” the FDU Knights wrote on their website. “Basketball took Rochford to the Netherlands, France, England, Switzerland, Iceland and Lithuania as he built a long and successful international career. Rochford became a champion in Lithuania with Sūduva-Mantinga before he averaged 19.1 points per game for Hamar in Iceland.”
“Rochford will be deeply missed by the FDU community,” the school added in its online tribute.
“He went above and beyond his duties as a Win coordinator, helping New Yorkers most in need find the path and will to build a brighter future,” Quinn wrote in a statement. “Kinu lived with purpose and his passion for helping others reached far beyond his role at Win, especially through his work across the city with children.”
Rochford was also described as a devoted fan of the New York Knicks, who recently won the NBA championship. “We must put an end to senseless gun violence plaguing our city and country. Kinu’s friends and families are in our hearts during this tragic time,” Quinn added.
