Marion County sees requests for immigration enforcement amid statewide surge
Jul 10, 2026
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office received most of the federal requests for help on immigration enforcement among local agencies over the last year, a new report shows.
Between June 2025 and May 2026, federal agencies requested the sheriff’s office’s assistance 29 times.
The report, p
ublished by the state’s Criminal Justice Commission, documented a total of 329 requests made to law enforcement statewide. That’s a significant increase from 95 reported in the same period last year.
Salem’s local agencies saw a total of 37 requests. In addition to the sheriff’s office requests, that included one to the Salem Police Department, two to the local dispatch center and five to the Polk County Jail.

The Washington County Jail received the most immigration requests of any Oregon agency with 79. Multnomah County Jail followed with 54, and the Oregon Department of Justice received 36.
The commission publishes the report annually, in accordance with Oregon law requiring agencies to refuse cooperation with federal immigration enforcement and subsequently report those requests to the state.
In last year’s report, Marion County received a total of 36 requests, with 25 sent to the sheriff’s office and 13 to the Marion County Jail.
Marion County a hotspot for federal immigration enforcement requests, report shows
Under Oregon’s sanctuary law, government agencies are prohibited from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement unless ordered to do so by a judge.
With judicial orders, Marion County deputies arrested two men on separate days in March and April earlier this year.
Most of the immigration requests over the last year were for detainers, which hold people in jail for two days after their release date so federal agents can arrive and take them into custody. Agencies sought detainers 180 times, making up more than half the total requests.
At least 26 of the requests sent to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office were for immigration detainers, the commission’s data dashboard shows.
The second-most frequent request was for information, with 100 instances reported. The single request reported by Salem Police was for information, according to the dashboard.
Since 2022, the commission has tracked data reported by agencies and the public on immigration enforcement. There is a Department of Justice hotline for reports of sanctuary law violations.
This year’s data on sanctuary law violations is not included in the report as the justice department hasn’t yet provided complete data, the report said.
When the data is provided, the commission will update the report.
