MLB dinger leader Kyle Schwarber joins Bryce Harper for CBP Derby
Jul 10, 2026
DETROIT — The Home Run Derby in South Philadelphia already had Bryce Harper.
Now it has teammate, the major-league home run leader.
The Phillies announced Friday that Kyle Schwarber will participate in Monday night’s Derby at Citizens Bank Park, joining Harper in what will become a Phillie
s-centered power show.
For Schwarber, it will be his third career Derby appearance and first since 2022, when he entered as the No. 1 seed but was eliminated in the first round by Albert Pujols.
His best Derby run came in 2018 at Nationals Park, when he finished runner-up to Harper. Eight years later, the two are teammates, both wearing Phillies colors and both swinging in front of their home fans.
Schwarber also has recent derby-ish All-Star stage success. Last year in Atlanta, he won All-Star Game MVP after delivering in the swing-off, adding another layer to his return to the spotlight next week at Citizens Bank Park.
He enters the event with 32 home runs, the most in the majors and the most by a Phillie before the All-Star break. He passed Mike Schmidt, who hit 31 before the break in 1979.
The pace has put Schwarber in position to chase one of the biggest records in franchise history. Ryan Howard holds the Phillies’ single-season mark with 58 homers in 2006. Schwarber’s 32 before the break gives him a chance to push toward 60.
If he gets there, No. 60 would also be the 400th homer of his career.
Schwarber’s power has not come out of nowhere. The underlying numbers show the same thing his home run total does. He entered Friday with a .530 expected slugging percentage, 19.7 percent barrel rate, 53.8 percent hard-hit rate and 93.5 mph average exit velocity.
There is still swing-and-miss. There always has been. But Schwarber’s damage has outweighed it, again.
Harper announced Thursday on Instagram that he would join the Derby. It will be his third career appearance. He finished second to Yoenis Céspedes in 2013 before winning the event over Schwarber in 2018.
This time, Harper will not be the only Phillies star on that stage.
The Derby is scheduled for Monday at 8 p.m. on Netflix, one night before Citizens Bank Park hosts the 96th MLB All-Star Game.
Harper already has one Derby title. Schwarber has been one round away.
Now, with both in the same uniform, they will try to bring Philly their first one in two decades, when Ryan Howard won in 2006 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.
