It is with great sadness we announce the unexpected passing of Michael Marceau while he was attending the annual meeting of the American Society of Engineering Education.
Michael was born in February 1960, the son of Dr. J. Edward Marceau and Jacqueline (LeMay
) Marceau. The family lived in Shelburne, Vt., during his early years and then purchased land and a house on Hinesburg Road in South Burlington, where he grew up. He attended South Burlington schools and graduated from South Burlington High School. Many summers were spent cutting and baling hay on his parents’ property. This was where his love of John Deere tractors was born, and it was a passion he continued for life. He attended the University of Vermont and received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering. While a graduate student at UVM, he was a lecturer in electrical engineering, which would eventually lead him to a second career.
He was employed by the IBM Corporation from 1988 to 2002, working as a product yield characterization engineer.
In 2002 he was able to pursue his love of teaching and went to work at Vermont Technical College (now Vermont State University) at both the Williston and Randolph campus. He served as his department chair from 2003 to 2011. For the next 24 years he dedicated himself to providing a high quality education for his students. He stayed current with emerging technologies, teaching techniques and being available for whatever help his students needed to succeed.
In September 1994, he married Mary Lavigne at St. Benedict’s in North Hero. They made their home in Milton. They enjoyed traveling around the country attending conferences, visiting with family and friends, railroad museums, and exploring the back roads of Vermont looking for locations of former train stations. Michael was an avid collector of model trains and Rutland Railroad memorabilia.
Another interest was planting and maintaining an apple and pear orchard located on family property in North Hero. In the fall, it’s all hands on deck to help with the picking, sorting, washing, chopping and pressing of the apples to make cider.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lavigne; mother-in-law, Dorothy Lavigne, brothers-in-law Richard Lavigne and Peter Lavigne (Cindy); sister-in-law Margaret Lavigne; brother, Frank Marceau (Moni); sisters, Sue Enna and Michelle Marceau, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom he felt great affection for.
Michael is predeceased by his parents, J. Edward and Jackie Marceau; father-in-law, J. Arthur Lavigne; and brother-in-law David Enna.
Michael will be remembered as a man of great compassion, kindness and generosity. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Rutland Railroad Association, 79 Depot St., Center Rutland, VT 05736, or visit the support page at rutlandrailwaymuseum.org and donate via GoFundMe.
A funeral mass will be on Friday, July 31, 2026, 11 a.m., at St. Rose of Lima Church, 501 Route 2, South Hero, VT.
