KEY TAKEAWAYS: Terrytown Café permanently closed after 41 years, with its final day of service held today. The family said the building was sold and the restaurant’s lease was not renewed. Founded by Lynne and Phillip Songy, the café remained open after Phillip Songy’s death in 2017. The longtime neighborhood favorite was known for doughnuts, apple fritters, breakfast plates, king cakes and home-brewed coffee. Terrytown Café, a longtime family-owned West Bank neighborhood restaurant, is closing permanently after more than four decades in business. The final day of service was today as the closure ends a long run for the Gretna business started by Lynne and Phillip Songy. Phillip Songy died of cancer in 2017, and Lynne Songy continued operating the cafe after his death. The Songy family said the owners of the building sold the property, and the cafe’s lease was not renewed. “This has truly been so heartbreaking for all of us after 41 years,” the family wrote in a social media post. “It’s very unfortunate that it had to happen like this with very short notice, but we are staying positive as much as we can and know that God must have a better plan for us.” Located at 2018 Carol Sue Ave., the longtime West Bank staple was known for its hand cut doughnuts, apple fritters made with real apples, breakfast plates, mini burgers, king cakes, and home-brewed coffee. The café invited customers to stop by today for a final visit before closing. In the social media post, the family described the restaurant as a place shaped by generations of customers and employees. “We will miss you guys so much from the customers and the employees who have truly became family to us,” the post said. “We will miss the community that we have grown so close to in the last 41 years in Terrytown. To everyone that has supported us you will never know how grateful we are to you guys. … We love you guys so much and thank y’all for everything over these last 41 years!” ...read more read less
