An assault that took place in Wallace Marine Park last August has resulted in prison time for the three men involved. The defendants claimed in court that the attack was out of retaliation for the victim sexually assaulting one of their girlfriends — a claim Polk County prosecutors and Salem po lice could never verify. Polk County Circuit Court Judge Monte Campbell sentenced Robert Lanoy, 19, on Dec. 16, 2025, and Chance Lawrence, 18, on June 8 to seven and a half years each for the attack, court records show. Judge Timothy Park sentenced Xavier Wilcox, 19, on June 16 to three years. In addition to time in prison, the men will each serve at least two and half years of post-prison supervision. Lanoy, Lawrence and Wilcox were each charged with first-degree attempted robbery, third-degree assault, menacing and recklessly endangering a person. Each of the three eventually pleaded guilty to the attack. “They all acknowledged they did it and had very little defense for this,” Polk County District Attorney Aaron Felton said. The difference in sentences reflect the different involvement each man had in the attack.  Lanoy and Lawrence carried out the assault on the victim, while Wilcox recorded it.  Felton said the video was then posted to social media to further humiliate the victim.  “You don’t get to do this to somebody,” he said. The victim was left with bruises and scrapes after the attack, and had vision impairment for several days as the attackers used pepper spray to his eyes, Felton said. After the attack happened on Aug. 4, 2025, the victim, now 21, called to report it the same day. The three men “lured” the victim from downtown Salem’s transit mall to the boat ramp area at Wallace Marine Park in West Salem, a statement by the Polk County District Attorney’s Office said. Felton said the young men knew each other before the attack and the attackers got the victim to get in a car to drive to the park. After arriving near the boat ramp, the defendants forced the victim to take off his clothes before Lanoy and Lawrence “beat, kicked and repeatedly pepper-sprayed his eyes and face,” the statement said. During the attack, the men verbally humiliated the victim as he begged them to stop, according to the statement. The attackers claimed the attack had been retaliation for the victim assaulting the girlfriend of one of the two men who carried out the physical assault, according to Felton. “There was no validity to this,” Felton said. County prosecutors worked to find evidence of the assault and found nothing to substantiate it.  “Even if it were the case, it’s vigilante justice … (you) can’t do that,” he said. This case is the first time that Lanoy, Lawrence and Wilcox have faced criminal charges, according to state records, which don’t include juvenile cases.
