Ten unoccupied cars and five homes were struck by gunfire Monday afternoon in the Village of Westover community in Dover, Delaware, according to the Dover Police Department. Around 5:11 p.m., officers responded to reports of multiple gunshots in the area of East Broadstairs Place. When they arriv ed, they found approximately 40 spent shell casings on the road, according to officials. Police said preliminary investigation and video surveillance indicate that a maroon SUV was traveling through East Broadstairs Place when several suspects got out of a dark-colored sedan and opened fire on the SUV. As a result, 10 cars and five homes were shot at, officials said. No injuries were reported. Police said after the shooting, both cars left the scene before officers arrived. Matthew Turner’s car was one of the ten that were hit. He said he had just gotten home from work when the shooting happened. “I would say 20 minutes after I went inside this happens, so I’d say I’m very lucky,” Turner said. Early Tuesday, police said they found the maroon SUV, but not the driver. The search for the other sedan is also ongoing. Moreover, police said they’re trying to determine if this incident is connected to other crimes. “I thought it was an accident because it sounded like ‘smash, smash, smash,’ like a car hitting another car,” Pat Frederick, who lives on that street, said. Lt. Mark Hoffman, with the Dover Police Department, said he is glad nobody was hurt. “Thank God nobody was injured in this situation, but it could have been far, far worse, with a lot of innocent people put at risk yesterday,” Hoffman said. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Dover Police Department at (302) 736-7145. Callers may remain anonymous. Tips may also be submitted through Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333 or online at www.delaware.crimestoppersweb.com. Police said a cash reward may be available for information leading to an arrest. ...read more read less
