Update: July 7 at 6 p.m. A 65-year-old man with a history of drunken driving arrests has been indicted on murder and DUI charges in the death of a 75-year-old woman in a traffic crash last summer.Stephen Barber was arrested afte r a Fayette County grand jury indicted him in the August 2025 death of Linda Johnson. He is being held on a $750,000 full cash bond.Police say Barber's Mustang slammed into the back of Johnson's vehicle on Man O' War Boulevard near Clearwater Way on a Sunday afternoon around 5:30 p.m., pushing her car off the road. Johnson was later pronounced dead at UK Hospital."This man needs to know that he wrecked a lot of things, he wrecked a lot of lives," said Drew Johnson, the victim's son.Drew Johnson remembered his mother as a doting grandmother and devoted University of Kentucky fan who remained independent at 75."The fact is, the guy was drunk or he was under the influence," Drew Johnson said. "He was arrested at the scene and the fact that he was behind the wheel... what was he doing driving?"Court records show Barber has previous DUI arrests. In 2015, he pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle under the influence in Jessamine County and was sentenced to four days in jail. In 2022, he was arrested in Garrard County on another DUI charge, but that was dismissed when he pleaded guilty to speeding 20 mph over the limit."I believe everyone makes mistakes," Drew Johnson said. "It comes down to whether they learn from the mistake or they don't learn from the mistake. And it wasn't like it was one mistake, it was two mistakes, and 3rd strike, you're out, and the out was my mom."Barber is scheduled to be arraigned on the murder and DUI charges Friday in Fayette Circuit Court.Leigh Searcy is committed to covering the stories that matter to you. A 2022 DUI charge was dismissed after he entered a guilty plea to speeding.Barber's next arraignment is set for July 10. ...read more read less
