A circle of orange cones and yellow caution tape currently stands on a stretch of sidewalk on Ella T. Grasso Boulevard near MLK Boulevard — blocking off a temporarily filled sinkhole that was roughly 16 feet long by 12 feet wide by 9 feet deep. Connecticut Department of Transportation (CT DOT) spokesperson Eva Zymaris told the Independent on Tuesday that CT DOT crews found out about the sinkhole over the weekend. The currently blocked off area is on the eastern side of Ella T. Grasso Boulevard just south of MLK. It is immediately adjacent to the West River Peace Garden, and does not extend into the roadway itself. The Independent first learned of the sinkhole in an interview with Mayor Justin Elicker on Monday. “After determining the repair falls under CTDOT’s responsibility, our team inspected the site and identified the cause as a separation in a pipe,” Zymaris told the Independent. “The sinkhole was temporarily filled to avoid further issues. Permanent repairs will be completed this week.” Zymaris said that the pipe that separated was a 12-inch drainage pipe. Was this sinkhole caused by Saturday’s storm, which brought high-speed winds and heavy rain to the city? “This could have been a pre-existing condition under the sidewalk prior to the storm,” Zymaris wrote.
