Texas Tech’s offseason search for a quarterback
Texas Tech is coming off a historic College Football Playoff appearance. They’re led by former Cedar Hill High School coach Joey McGuire. Tech made offseason headlines after rec
ruiting embattled quarterback Brendan Sorsby, who is from Lake Dallas.
Sorsby engaged in a legal battle with the NCAA, which had declared him ineligible for making thousands of sports bets worth at least $90,000, including during his freshman year at Indiana University in 2022. He did not play in the games he bet on for the Hoosiers that season.
The NFL ruled he cannot join the league until the 2027 draft or after. Sorsby will also not be playing college football this year. It’s unclear who will start in his place.
Tech is expected to be a conference-favorite once again.
Former UNT coach takes over for Oklahoma State
Oklahoma State is starting a new chapter with former UNT head coach Eric Morris, hot off one of the best seasons in North Texas history. He also took some players with him, including quarterback Drew Mestemaker, running back Caleb Hawkins, and linebacker Ethan Wesloski. Expectations will likely be tempered in year one, but a lot of people are anticipating what’s to come from Stillwater.
Colorado looks to return to winning ways with Deion ‘cancer-free’
Colorado coach and Dallas Cowboys legend Deion Sanders said he was feeling like his old self again after surgery to remove his cancerous bladder. Sanders is coming off his worst season at Colorado (3-9, 1-8 in conference). The team is still looking for a quarterback to take the reins after Shedeur Sanders left for the NFL in 2024.Its success could hinge on the productivity of quarterback Julian Lewis. The young quarterback saw limited action last year, finishing with 290 passing yards and two touchdowns through the air. Will Sanders endorse Lewis as his full-time starting quarterback?
Can a new QB give Dave Aranda’s Baylor team a boost?
Baylor finished the 2025 season with a lot of question marks. The school quickly handled a key aspect when it announced that Dave Aranda would return as its head football coach in November.
Now, Aranda enters another pivotal campaign where Baylor looks to regain its status as a Big 12 power. The Bears will have a new leader under center in Florida transfer DJ Lagway, whose father, Derek, played at Baylor from 1997-2001. Lagway will look to regain his footing after a sour ending to his time at Florida.

Big 12 becomes first Power Four conference to have all members agree to CSC participation
The Big 12 became the first Power Four conference to have each of its members sign participation agreements with the College Sports Commission, the agency formed last year to police name, image, and likeness payments. The agreement requires schools to waive their right to file lawsuits against the enforcement agency and gives it wide latitude to sanction programs for violating rules that outline how players can be paid after the House settlement last year.
But all 68 Power Four schools must sign the 11-page document for it to become valid. All schools had initially been asked to review and sign the document by last December.
The document outlines rules that have been established since the House settlement was approved last summer — for instance, about the salary cap and the CSC’s role in analyzing third-party name, image, likeness deals through its NIL Go platform.
The CSC says it has cleared more than 26,000 NIL deals worth some $242.3 million through May 1 since its launch.
