A young woman was shot Saturday, July 4, after the shooter alleged he was attacked by people lighting off fireworks. The incident happened in a private parking lot in the 1400 block of Southeast Mill Street. Salem Police Department spokesman Sgt. Jon Hardy declined to confirm which parking lot in the area the shooting happened. A group of 20 people was lighting fireworks in central Salem before the alleged assault of a 54-year-old man occurred, police said in a statement Monday. Officers arrived on scene around 10:30 p.m. According to the report, the groundskeeper asked the group to leave since the lot was private property, and they refused. Some in the group, which was made up of people in their 20s, then allegedly began assaulting the man. During the attack, the groundskeeper discharged a firearm to shoot at the ground several times and hit a woman in her lower leg, the statement said. She had non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, police spokesman Hardy said.  The woman was not identified in the statement, and Hardy declined to identify the groundskeeper. Police had no information on what prompted the group to assault the groundskeeper, Hardy said. The Willamette Heritage Center, a Willamette University building and Bush Elementary School are within the area where the shooting happened.  Spokespeople for Willamette and the Salem-Keizer School District confirmed the shooting did not happen on either university or school property. Two officials at the heritage center did not respond to phone calls or messages Monday requesting confirmation and further details. No criminal charges have been filed yet for the shooting, but the police report will be reviewed by the Marion County District Attorney’s Office. Detectives with the police department’s Violent Crimes Unit are investigating the incident, the statement said. Contact reporter Madeleine Moore: [email protected].
