“Kids were screaming”: Grandmother recounts Coney Island July 4th mass shooting
Jul 05, 2026
The person who shot four kids and four adults at a Fourth of July barbeque in Coney Island, Brooklyn remained on the run Sunday evening.
The New York City Police Dept. is investigating whether the mass shooting is connected to a gang-related killing that happened earlier in the week on the same b
lock.
“When I came downstairs, I’m like, ‘all my grands got shot.’ I’m just going crazy right now,” said a woman who identified herself as a grandmother of the young victims. She spoke with NBC New York about the family gathering that turned into chaos.
“They’re in the hospital… we were just having a party for the kids,” she said.
“People were running, people were screaming, kids were screaming,” a witness added.
The shooting happened in the courtyard of a high-rise building on 30th St. and Surf Ave. in Coney Island at around 10:30 Saturday night.
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters Sunday that “an unknown male dressed in all black and wearing a black ski mask approached the fence line along Surf Ave. and fired multiple rounds into the courtyard.”
The wounded children are ages 6, 7, 12 and 14.
“The six-year-old might lose his legs, so we don’t know,” said the grandmother. “I think it was like five or ten gunshots,” added the witnesss. “I ran. I literally ran, dropped my phone and ran.”
Sunday, the family cleaned the mess left behind by the bloodshed. Police were still in the area.
“There is no place for this kind of violence in our city,” said Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D-New York City) at a news conference.
A firearm, along with 10 discharged shell casings, were recovered at the scene. Police have not released a description of the shooter. Investigators say there is no indication of any argument or altercation before the shooting.
