18yearold arrested for allegedly shooting NYPD officer in Brooklyn
Jul 05, 2026
An NYPD detective was hospitalized early Sunday morning following a shooting in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood, top brass said overnight.
Commissioner Jessica Tisch said an 18-year-old was arrested for allegedly shooting the detective, who was hit in the back of his bulletproof vest aro
und 4 a.m. The shooting occurred near the intersection of Nostrand Avenue and St. John’s Place.
Tisch said the injured detective was expected to make a full recovery.
According to what the commissioner said at a press conference alongside Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the involved officers were sitting in an unmarked police car at the Crown Heights intersection when they were approached by the 18-year-old. The officers, she said, had been reassigned to the area after covering the Sail4th 250 event.
The officers reportedly exited the car and “attempted to engage” the 18-year-old, Tisch explained. What happened next is unclear — there is no bodycam footage of the incident. But the commissioner said the suspect opened fire as well as three officers. Only the detective shot in the vest and a car were hit.
Police then chased down the 18-year-old suspect and arrested him a few blocks from the scene, according to the commissioner. Officers did use a Taser to subdue the man.
The suspect’s gun was recovered, Tisch said.
The injured detective, whom the commissioner identified as Robert Carroll, suffered a contusion in his back near where the bullet struck his vest. A second officer also suffered a contusion to the face and shoulder — how that officer was injured was not immediately clear.
