Dog whisperer shows common training mistakes INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Each and every week, “Pet Pals TV” shares a fun, interesting, and informative story about our four-legged and furry friend population. On the latest “Pet Pals TV,” host Patty Spitler and Anchor Pam Elliot were joined by “The American Dog Whisperer” Nathan Lowe to talk about training your dog and mistakes pet owners may be making in the process. “One of the biggest things dogs do differently at home than they do at training is claiming behavior,” Lowe said. Lowe conducted a recent training with a Rottweiler where they worked on jumping, which Lowe says is how dogs “claim you.” “Dogs claim by transferring scent on their pads to your pants. That’s why they leap. So they’ll mark you with a scent.” In the video, after the dog leaps on him, he “nips” the dog with the leash, informing the dog that it’s not okay to jump. “What I simulate is what Mama does,” implying that the mother often nips at their babies when they are misbehaving. Lowe said since puppies get nipped by their mothers, it’s perfectly okay to do that with your dog to redirect them. Lowe also shared video clips with the Rottweiler where the pair worked on possessive protection, especially when it comes to food. To see the rest of the advice Lowe recommends regarding training your four-legged friend, watch the video above. ...read more read less
