The Goal: Independence Every Day | Voice Of The Township
Jul 02, 2026
Independence has been at the heart of our story since America’s founding. And every July Fourth, we celebrate that hard-won freedom with fireworks, parades, family gatherings, and displays of our flag.
In the Declaration of Independence, our nation’s founders affirmed that all people are
created equal, and all deserve the opportunity to pursue their own path. Yet for some folks, life’s challenges can make independence difficult to achieve. Financial hardship, job loss, illness, or unexpected emergencies can create obstacles that are difficult to overcome alone.
At the Wayne Township Trustee Office, our mission is to help residents overcome the obstacles they encounter and help them move toward greater self-sufficiency. Whether we are assisting during a financial emergency, helping individuals find employment, providing scholarships and awards to support education, or offering food and clothing to families in need, our goal is always the same: helping people regain stability and independence.
One of the most important ways we do this is through education and empowerment. We regularly offer orientation classes that connect clients with experts on a variety of practical topics. These sessions cover such skills as job searching, workplace success, household budgeting, energy efficiency, healthy meal planning, and basic banking. By providing information and resources, we help people build the knowledge and confidence needed to improve their circumstances.
Our Employment Team also works closely with clients by identifying job openings, sharing opportunities, and maintaining our “Wall of Opportunity” near the entrance of our office. Employment training classes help participants strengthen their resumes and interview skills. Through our Clothing Emporium, clients can access professional attire and receive guidance on selecting outfits appropriate for job interviews. For jobseekers who do not have reliable transportation, we can provide Citilink bus passes to help remove another barrier to employment.
Each of these services is designed to address a specific need, but together they serve a larger purpose: helping individuals gain the tools, skills, and opportunities they need to become self-reliant.
Independence is more than a national ideal celebrated once a year. It is something many people work toward every day. We are proud to support that journey by helping create opportunities for our neighbors to achieve greater security, self-sufficiency, and independence.
