Obituary: Mary Cornu
Jul 02, 2026
May 26, 1931 – June 24, 2026Mary Elizabeth Francis Boswell Cornu passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 24, 2026, at the age of 95.
Born on May 26, 1931, in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, Mary spent her childhood in Seaforth, Ontario, where she experienced the profound loss of her mother at
a young age. She carried that strength and resilience with her throughout her life. After graduating from Teachers’ College in London, Ontario, she set off at the age of 22 on a European adventure, carefully documenting every stop along the way—a lifelong habit of preserving memories and the stories that mattered.
Earlier this year, Mary said goodbye to the love of her life, her husband, Claude “CB” Cornu, after 72 wonderful years of marriage. Their family likes to think that after five months apart, she decided that was long enough. We smile imagining Mary and Claude joyfully reunited, and Mary reunited at last with her mother, Phoebe. No doubt, they were also welcomed by the many beloved dogs Mary and Claude cherished through the years.
Mary and Claude built a life full of adventure together. Claude’s career took their family from Canada to Texas to Delaware to Holland to San Francisco, and eventually back to Wilmington, Delaware. As retirement approached, they traveled extensively searching for the perfect place to settle. Nothing quite felt like home, so to be near their growing family, they decided to give Park City, Utah, a try for “a couple of years”. That was in 1999. There they found not only grandchildren and, later, great-grandchildren nearby, but also lifelong friends—especially their wonderful neighbors on Twilight Court, whose kindness, friendship, and watchful care meant so much to Mary and Claude over the years.
Mary is survived by her sons, Michael (Sarah) and Craig (Annie); three granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren, all of whom were the pride and joy of her life.
Mary possessed an adventurous spirit and an independent mind. Her father, Ned, taught her an invaluable lesson about investing: never spend the principal. She took that advice to heart but developed her own bold style. Her stockbroker once joked that while his strategy was to aim for solid singles and doubles, Mary always swung for the fences—and more often than not, she connected. One of her favorite memories and how she got started was in 1968 when she watched Johnny Carson interview someone about a little company called IBM. She bought shares the very next day, a decision that reflected both her curiosity and confidence in making her own investments.
Wherever Mary lived, she made friends effortlessly. She approached life with a panache that was entirely her own. She created beautiful needlepoint pillows and wall hangings, loved bridge, gardening, flowers, golf, and spirited conversations. Skiing, despite living in Park City, never made the list. She loved movies, especially the Sundance Film Festival, where she and her lively group of friends were a memorable presence. Thanksgiving will never be the same without her homemade pies. She never met a waiter who remained a stranger by the end of dinner, and she had an extraordinary way of making people feel like old friends.
Mary also had a special love for dogs. Visitors quickly learned that she almost always had cookies tucked into her pockets, ready to reward any four-legged friend who happened to stop by.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff at The Wellington and the A Plus Hospice team for their compassion, kindness, and exceptional care during Mary’s final days.
Mary lived with grace, curiosity, generosity, and unmistakable style. She leaves behind a legacy of adventure, enduring friendships, unwavering love for her family, and countless stories that will continue to bring smiles for generations to come. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
In lieu of flowers, Mary would have preferred something much simpler: be kind to your pets and share your love with family and friends every single day.
The family will announce plans for a memorial service in the coming weeks. Rest in peace sweet Mary.
