Nearly 20 people experienced heat-related emergencies Thursday afternoon as crowds gathered to watch the Union Pacific’s No. 4014, known as “Big Boy,” in Muhlenberg Township, according to police. The heat-related emergencies were reported as the massive locomotive — 133 feet long and weig hing 1.2 million pounds — is wrapping up a nationwide tour with some stops across Pennsylvania Thursday, before heading to Philadelphia on Friday. SkyForce10 flew over the scene at Muhlenberg Park, where hundreds of people could be seen walking around the site while first responders rendered aid to multiple people. According to Police Chief Randall Hoover, some people were treated on-site, while others were taken to a hospital for further treatment. He said most of the patients were elderly or children. Hoover said Big Boy was scheduled to arrive around 1:05 p.m., and many people began showing up as early as 9 a.m. However, the train arrived about an hour late, leaving many people unprepared for the heat. With Fourth of July festivities just around the corner, the police chief stressed the importance of being prepared amid the extreme heat. “Heat is going to be an issue, stay hydrated,” Hoover said. On Friday, Big Boy is set to depart King of Prussia and travel along the Schuylkill to the Navy Yard, where it was set to be on display for free on July 4 and 5. No. 4014 is the only locomotive left in operation after a restoration, although seven others are on display around the country. ...read more read less
