COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– State lawmakers missed a key budget deadline Tuesday, June 30 leaving the state without a finalized spending plan for the new fiscal year. At the center of the standoff, a disagreement between House and Senate leaders over where the state’s money should go. Senate negot iators have pushed for a major expansion of property tax relief for senior homeowners while House lawmakers have favored setting aside more money for local projects and community initiatives throughout the state. Despite the missed deadline you probably won’t notice immediate changes in state services. Earlier this year, lawmakers approved a temporary funding measure that allows government agencies to continue operating under current spending levels until a new budget is approved.
