A Philadelphia police officer shot and killed an armed man outside of St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, officials said. On Thursday, July 2, shortly before 10:30 a.m., police received a report of an “irate male” inside St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. When police responded , they were met by security guards who reported a possibly armed man inside the hospital. Officials said the officers confronted the man outside the hospital along East Erie Avenue shortly after. A woman was also standing near him, according to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel. The man pulled out a gun and one of the officers pulled out their own weapon and opened fire, shooting the man multiple times, officials said. The man was taken to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Commissioner Bethel said the woman who was standing near him was also injured though it’s unclear if she was shot. She was taken to the hospital and placed in critical but stable condition. While police have not yet revealed why the unidentified man was initially at the hospital, Bethel said he may have been going through a mental health crisis. “This individual may have been going through some kind of mental issue. Or some kind of mental breakdown,” Commissioner Bethel said. No officers were injured during the incident. Police continue to investigate. This story is developing. Check back for updates.
