Friends of the Park City Library invites Fourth of July weekend revelers to take a break from the heat in the annual, air-conditioned used book sale. The sale, which raises money to supplement the library’s annual budget, is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, said Cathy Lanigan, Friends of the Park City Library co-chair. “We do two sales a year, one in July and the other on Miners Day, which is Labor Day,” she said. “I think the community looks at these sales as a place to come in, see their neighbors and friends, get some air conditioning, get drinks at Lucky Ones Coffee and support the library, even if they just buy a couple of children’s books.” This year’s book sale starts Friday with a Friends of the Park City Library members-only preview at 8 a.m., and it will open to the public at 10 a.m. until the sale closes at 4 p.m. Saturday’s sale is open to the public from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and will include a tote-bag happy hour from 2-4 p.m., when shoppers can fill a provided tote bag for $15. Book prices until the happy hour are as follows: Children books — $1 Adult books — $2 for paperbacks and $3 for hardcovers Collections — $5 The Collections category was established last autumn, according to Lanigan. “We realized that people were donating valuable, old books, like first-edition books from 1849 and so on,” she said. “Our volunteers who sort the books got into our faces because we were selling them for only $2. So the Collections category is about special editions, unique and hard to find books in good condition, and we sell those for $5.” All purchases can be made with cash and Venmo, with credit cards for sales over $10. Anyone who is interested in Friday’s members-only preview can become a Friends of the Park City Library member, Lanigan said. “You can get a $25 membership online (tinyurl.com/3mjt6hna), or you can also go to the information desk at the front entrance of the library anytime the library is open and fill out a form and purchase a membership with cash or check,” she said. Memberships will also be available for purchase before and during this year’s book sale, said Rachel Sahlman, Friends of the Park City Library co-chair. “We encourage people to renew their memberships each year so we have something to rely on to provide funding for the library,” she said. Annual membership provides reliable and predictable support for library programs and services such as: Allotting dollars to supplement library’s ebooks, which increases availability and reduces hold and wait times. Facilitating Spanish-language programming and materials. Supporting graphic novels which have high circulation numbers as demand continues to grow especially among youth and teen populations. Sustaining the library’s business center that includes access to printers, lamination, pens, staplers and paper cutters. Presenting summer outdoor movies. Supplementing Music on the Patio concerts. Funding library staff participation in the Utah Library Association Annual Conferences.  “One of the things I feel strongly about is our funding enables the library staff to participate in ongoing professional development,” Lanigan said.  In turn, members receive an array of benefits that include arly access to book sales and invitations to free special events such as author receptions. “July 30 is the One Book, One Community event we co-sponsor with the Friends of the Summit County Library, and our members are invited to a reception with the author, Shelley Read,” Lanigan said. Lanigan loves hosting used book sales in a town that cares about literacy. “Rachel and I both are on the team that sorts and gets the donated books ready for sale,” she said. “I’m always amazed at the quality and diversity of the books we can sell, and that quality is a direct result of a literate community, a community that cares about information.” Sahlman concurs. “One of our genres is classics, and it’s always cleaned out at every sale,” she said. “We also love it when people come in looking for something specific. It’s like they’re on a literary treasure hunt.” Friends of the Park City Library’s Used Book Sale When: Friday and Saturday; member preview runs from 8-10 a.m. Friday, and the public sale runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. both days.
