Rochester loves its hometown icons, and in that pantheon of lilacs and frozen custard there is a special place for the long-tenured local salsa band La Muralla. Founded on the city’s northside in 1973, this all-star mashup of musicians released a new album, “Como Me La Pida,” on June 28 that provides a delightful break from the reggaeton that dominates current music charts.  The band’s name translates, in English, to “the wall,” as in a “wall of tropical sound” — and this new album, their first since the passing of cofounder Mike Rosario in 2015, lives up to that moniker. La Muralla still features three original members: Tony Alvarez, David Antonetti and lead singer and songwriter Johnny Vega, who was inducted into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame in 2024. Como Me La Pida by Orquesta La Muralla Far from a nostalgia act, La Muralla is an intergenerational effort featuring a lineup of Rochester’s best Latin musicians. There is no AI, drum machines or any artificial ingredients added to the mix of danceable salsa and tropical boleros. The brassy wall of sound soars over the syncopated rhythms led by Lucas Santana, Ito Aguinzoni and Daniel “Deecoy” Antonetti (who has performed with legends like Tito Puente, Don Omar and Marc Anthony). From the bright, danceable pace of the opening title track to the joyous autobiographical “La Muralla, Su Historia,” “Como Me La Pida” is perfect for those hot summer afternoons in Rochester when we can close our eyes and imagine a slice of the tropics closer to home.
