The Pierre Volunteer Fire Department and the Pierre Rural Volunteer Fire Department were among agencies assisting with rescue efforts in the Highmore area Monday (June 29, 2026) after wind speeds clocked at more than 100mph caused widespread damage. According to Pierre Rescue Captain Trevor Lightfie ld, Pierre crews assisted local emergency responders in ensuring that all residents in Highmore and the surrounding rural area were accounted for after a powerful storm moved through in the early morning hours. He said given the severe damage, it’s an absolute blessing that everyone has been accounted for and that no severe injuries had been reported as of late afternoon on Monday. Pierre Fire Chief Ian Paul said the departments have responded to a number of storm events over the years, and they’re always ready to lend a hand when neighboring communities need assistance. He said they’re grateful they were able to be there to support Highmore’s emergency responders, and their thoughts remain with the entire community as they begin the recovery process.
