The woman who authorities said fled a double stabbin
g that left two of her relatives injured last week, setting off a large-scale search, returned to the scene in Brandon two days later and called 911 to turn herself in, according to Vermont State Police.
Tamara Stone, 51, of Brandon, was arrested Saturday morning at the residence on Triangle Court where authorities allege she stabbed two adult family members Thursday morning, police said.
Stone pleaded not guilty Monday afternoon in Bennington Superior criminal court in Bennington to two counts of attempted second-degree murder in the stabbings of two of her relatives — a man and a woman. Stone also denied two counts of aggravated domestic assault with a deadly weapon.
VTDigger does not typically name survivors of domestic violence.
Charging documents made public Monday say that the female victim told investigators after the attack that Stone recently hinted at a connection to the unsolved death of another family member. The woman who was injured Thursday said Stone told her: “Brian was first, and you (and the male victim) are next.”
“It should be noted that this was in reference to the unsolved death of Brian Bailey,” Vermont State Police Detective Sgt. Jesse Robson wrote in the documents.
Bailey, 46, was Stone’s brother. He was found dead from a gunshot wound in his Brandon home on the morning of May 24, 2025, according to police, who have termed his death suspicious.
The woman who was injured in the stabbing last week, wrote Robson in the charging documents, added that Stone “never admitted to the killing of Brian Bailey.”
Adam Silverman, a state police spokesperson, could not immediately be reached Monday for comment.
Stone appeared at Monday’s hearing by video from the Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility in Rutland, where she has been held without bail since her arrest.
The male victim in Thursday’s attack suffered stab wounds to his chest and back and was flown by helicopter to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, the charging documents stated.
The female family member was taken by ambulance to Rutland Regional Medical Center with stab wounds to her back, according to the documents.
Their conditions were not immediately available Monday afternoon, though authorities said both suffered serious injuries.
According to the charging documents, police were called to the Brandon home Thursday morning after the attack. The female family member told police that Stone used a knife about 12 inches long to stab her. The male victim said a knife used in the attack against him had been taken from a butcher’s block in the kitchen.
The injured woman told police that Stone stabbed her in the bathroom after Stone told her to go there and fix a leak under the sink, the charging documents said. The woman said that when she bent down to investigate the leak, Stone stabbed her in the back, the documents added.
The documents do not suggest a clear motive for either of the stabbings.
Stone fled the scene before police arrived, setting off a large search Thursday and Friday involving personnel from many law enforcement agencies.
In court Monday, Rutland County Deputy State’s Attorney Daron Raleigh asked that Stone continue to be held in custody without bail while the case proceeds.
“Ms. Stone attempted to murder two people,” Raleigh told Judge John Valente.
Also, the charging documents described Stone as “violent” and “unstable,” the prosecutor said.
“Ms. Stone took police on a nearly two-day chase in their efforts to apprehend her,” Raleigh told the judge. Raleigh added of Stone, “She is the definition of a risk of flight to avoid prosecution.”
Attorney Anthony Falcone, representing Stone, did not object to the prosecutor’s request to hold his client without bail, and the judge granted it.
If convicted of the charges, Stone faces up to life in prison.
