Trumpbacked Julia Letlow wins, faces Democrat Jamie Davis for Senate
Jun 29, 2026
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
Julia Letlow defeated Treasurer John Fleming in the Republican primary with President Trump’s endorsement.
Democrat Jamie Davis won his party’s primary with 80% of the vote over Gary Crockett.
Letlow and Davis will face off in the Nov. 3 general election for Louisiana’s U.
S. Senate seat.
The winner will succeed Sen. Bill Cassidy, who failed to advance after finishing third in the GOP primary.
Louisiana Congresswoman Julia Letlow rode President Trump’s endorsement to a Republican Party primary election win over Treasurer John Fleming on June 27, while little-known farmer Jamie Davis won the Democratic Party primary.
Letlow and Davis will face each other in the Nov. 3 general election, where voters will choose Louisiana’s next senator.
It’s a race in which Letlow will be heavily favored in an increasingly red state, where Republicans hold every statewide elected seat.
The winner will replace incumbent Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy, who was ousted as the third-place finisher in the May 16 GOP primary after Trump worked against him because of Cassidy’s 2021 vote to convict the president in his second impeachment trial.
Letlow, who lives in Baton Rouge, was first elected to Congress in a 2021 special election held after her late husband Congressman-elect Luke Letlow died from COVID before he could be seated. Letlow won with 57%.

She had been an administrator at the University of Louisiana at Monroe before winning her seat in the U.S. House, where she quickly rose up the ranks and secured a seat on the powerful Appropriations Committee.
Letlow’s primary runoff win seemed inevitable after securing 45% to finish far ahead of the field in the May 16 primary with Trump’s endorsement and a massive fundraising lead.
The president’s remarkable winning percentage is 98% during this cycle.
Letlow also had the support of Gov. Jeff Landry and most of the state’s most influencial elected Republicans.
Davis, whose only previous win to elective office was as a member of the Louisiana Democratic Party’s state central committee, is the grandson of a sharecropper.
He beat Gary Crockett, who campaigned as a New Orleans businessman and retired career U.S. Navy veteran. Davis won 80% of the votes.
Davis, who farms 2,500 acres of corn, cotton and soybeans on the same land his grandfather tilled, campaigned on improving affordability for all from healthcare to housing.
Davis lives in Ferriday and farms in Tensas Parish, one of the poorest parishes in Louisiana.
He earned the endorsement of the Louisiana Democratic Party.
