A 19-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the hand on a Route 46 SEPTA bus in West Philadelphia on Sunday, police said.
The incident happened at around 5:30 p.m. at the 800 block of South 60th Street, police said.
According to Philadelphia Police Inspector DF Pace, officers arrived at th
e scene to find a young man running from the scene with a gunshot wound to the hand.
A preliminary investigation has determined that the teen had a handgun in his backpack, and then accidentally shot himself in the hand, Pace said.
Officers were able to catch up to the teen and he was taken to the hospital, where he is in stable condition, Pace said. However, the teen is also considered a prisoner because he was not legally allowed to possess a handgun at his age.
The SEPTA bus had surveillance on at the time, and cameras spotted another man take the backpack the teen had left behind and run off with it. According to Pace, police are still looking for that suspect and the backpack because it has evidence relevant to the investigation.
No other injuries were reported as a result of the incident, police said.
Anyone with any information on the incident is urged to contact the Philadelphia Police Department at 215-686-TIPS (8477) or anonymously online here.
